Young Journalist Ireland, NewsBrands Ireland’s student journalism and news literacy programme, is teaming up with Microsoft Dream Space for a special live media literacy session to mark Global Media and Information Literacy Week.

“Who do you trust? What would you check?” will take place on Thursday, 22 October from 11.30am–12.15pm and is open to Junior Cycle, Transition Year and Youthreach learners.

The 45-minute Dream Space LIVE will challenge students to think like journalists and consider how they decide whether information they encounter online deserves to be trusted.

The Dream Space team will be joined by Kevin Doyle, Executive Editor of the Irish Independent, who will give students an insight into how professional journalists approach verification, fact-checking and the decision to publish.

Through newsroom-style challenges, classroom discussion and real examples from news rooms, students will consider incomplete information, identify what evidence may be missing and explore the questions journalists ask before information is reported or shared.

The session will also look at how social media, online platforms and artificial intelligence are changing the way information is created, shared and encountered. Rather than simply categorising information as “real” or “fake”, students will be encouraged to ask three key questions: Who is behind it? What evidence supports it? What else could help confirm it?

The collaboration forms part of Young Journalist Ireland’s work to help young people understand how credible journalism is produced and develop practical skills to navigate today’s increasingly complex information environment.

The LIVE is suitable for Junior Cycle, Transition Year and Youthreach learners, with no previous knowledge of journalism or media literacy required. Classes need only an internet-connected screen with audio to participate; individual student devices or accounts are not required.
