News Ireland appoints Kieran McDaid as Ireland Editor of The Sunday Times and Fiona Wynne as Editor of The Irish Sun

News Ireland has appointed Kieran McDaid as Ireland Editor of The Sunday Times and Fiona Wynne as Editor of The Irish Sun. Declan Ferry has also been promoted to Deputy Editor of The Irish Sun.

Kieran McDaid: Originally from Donegal, Kieran has over 20 years of journalistic experience across Daily and Sunday national newspapers, newswire and regional press. He started his journalism career in 2001 as a reporter at The Irish News in Belfast where, in his first year, he covered every day of the 11-week Holy Cross School dispute from the streets of Ardoyne, North Belfast. He then moved to the Press Association news agency (now PA Media) where he worked as News and Politics correspondent, reporting from the Northern Ireland Assemble in Stormont and the Bloody Sunday Inquiry.

Kieran has extensive experience in journalism and leadership across news, politics, special correspondence teams and business having covered the historic economic crash and subsequent bank bailout in 2008. For the past seven and a half years, Kieran has been Editor of The Irish Sun, Ireland’s biggest selling tabloid newspaper. During his tenure, the publication won multiple journalism awards and ran numerous campaigns including ‘Call This Out’, which aimed to fight misogyny and violence against women.

Kieran also oversaw the digital transformation of The Irish Sun, growing the online audience and launching two popular podcasts, including ‘The Kinahans’ which won Podcast of the Year at the Irish Journalism Awards 2023.

Fiona Wynne: Originally from Cavan, Fiona has nearly 25 years’ experience in journalism. After graduating from DCU, she started her career as a news and features reporter in The Irish Daily Mirror, where she covered everything from crime and politics to health and entertainment.

She joined The Irish Sun as Features Editor in 2006 and held that position for eight years before becoming Assistant Editor. In 2016, she stepped into the role of Deputy Editor where she spearheaded a number of campaigns including ‘Call This Out’ which demanded an end to violence against women and ‘Show Some Heart’ which lobbied the government to install defibrillators in schools across Ireland.

Declan Ferry has also been promoted to Deputy Editor.

Declan Ferry, from Donegal, has worked across a number of publications including The Irish Daily Mirror, The Irish Daily Mail and The Irish News of the World, in a career in journalism spanning over 20 years.

He joined The Irish Sun as Digital Editor in 2016 ahead of thesun.ie‘s relaunch later that year, before becoming Assistant Editor in 2020.
