Frank Fitzgibbon, editor of the Irish edition of The Sunday Times, is stepping down after 15 years in the role.

Frank has had an outstanding career, and joined The Sunday Times Ireland as Business Editor in 2004. He founded the Sunday Business Post and has also worked as a broadcaster with RTÉ.

In the last year alone, the paper scooped six wins at the NewsBrands Ireland Journalism Awards, recognising its ground-breaking revelations about the financial affairs of the Football Association of Ireland.

He said: “After 15 years editing the Ireland edition of The Sunday Times I believe the time has come to move on.

“There has been much turbulence and many challenges over the course of the past decade and a half but the newspaper has coped with them all. Now we face perhaps the greatest challenge yet with the move to a digital first strategy.

“Given the importance of this project it seems appropriate that responsibility for bringing this strategy to fruition over the next few years should be given to somebody who can bring a fresh approach to the task.”

Frank will edit his final edition of the paper this weekend and deputy editor John Burns will step in as acting editor during the process of appointing a successor.

The Sunday Times Editor Emma Tucker said: “Frank has led The Sunday Times Ireland with brave and ferocious leadership. I’d like to thank him for his distinctive contribution and wish him every success in the future.”

Richard Bogie, Managing Director of News Ireland said: “Frank has led the team on The Sunday Times Ireland with exceptional energy and vigour for many years. His passion has been undimmed despite the difficulties of the covid era and has resulted in a stellar sales performance, bucking market trends and delivering year on year growth in the most testing of circumstances. Frank leaves us on a high and I wish him all the best in the future.”
