The Irish Sun has launched a major new investigative series, ‘State of Neglect’, examining serious failures in Ireland’s State care system and their impact on some of the country’s most vulnerable children.
The series shines a light on the experiences of children in State care, examining cases involving unexplained child deaths, children going missing from care, grooming and sexual exploitation. It raises serious questions about the level of oversight and protection in place for vulnerable children, and whether the systems designed to safeguard them are working as they should.
The investigation comes amid growing public concern about the treatment and protection of children in State care, with tragic cases including Kyran Durnin and Daniel Aruebose highlighting serious questions around how vulnerable children are monitored, supported and protected.
Through ‘State of Neglect’, The Irish Sun is calling for greater accountability from Tusla and for the establishment of an independent statutory body to investigate all child deaths in Ireland. The campaign is highlighting the need for greater transparency and independent scrutiny when serious failures occur, ensuring they are properly investigated and lessons are learned to better protect vulnerable children.
The series also aims to bring greater visibility to the experiences of children in State care, giving a wider audience an insight into the realities they face and examining the wider failings that can leave vulnerable young people without the safety and care they need.
Fiona Wynne, Editor of The Irish Sun, says: “Every child deserves to feel safe, loved and valued. When children are in the care of the State, that responsibility is even greater.
‘State of Neglect’ shines a light on deeply troubling cases and asks important questions about whether vulnerable children are receiving the protection and support they deserve. Their experiences cannot be ignored, and greater accountability is needed to ensure the system is working for those it is there to keep safe.”
