Shortlist announced for the 2019 NewsBrands Ireland Journalism Awards sponsored by the National Lottery

October 21st 2019. The shortlist has been announced for the 2019 NewsBrands Ireland Journalism Awards, which are sponsored by the National Lottery.

The Journalism Awards feature a total of 26 categories spanning all areas and disciplines of modern journalism. Entry to the Journalism Awards is open to any work published in print, website, online, mobile, video, or audio from any NewsBrands Ireland member title. This year sees the addition of three new digital categories: Best News Website/News App; Podcast of the Year; and Best Use of Video

Commenting on the awards shortlist, Tim Vaughan, Chairman of the Judging Panel, said: “It’s no secret that journalism is under siege but you wouldn’t know it from this year’s entries. They were simply outstanding across the board, speaking truth to power and revealing what otherwise would have stayed hidden, as well as informing and entertaining with insight and brilliance.”

The judging process involves two stages. First, the hundreds of entries are carefully read by category sub-panels, made up of journalists and editors. Each sub-panel is chaired by a member of the independent judging panel to ensure any potential conflict of interest is avoided. The best of these entries are chosen for the shortlists in each category.

The overall winners are chosen by the independent judging panel, presided over by Chairman of the judging panel, Tim Vaughan.

All shortlisted nominees progress to the awards event which takes place in Dublin’s Mansion House on Thursday, 14th of November, where the category winners will be announced. The highlight of the awards ceremony is the announcement of the Journalist of the Year, which last year went to Rosita Boland from The Irish Times.

Awards sponsored by the National Lottery

The awards will continue to be sponsored by the National Lottery who have signed up for a new three-year sponsorship deal.

The 2019 NewsBrands Ireland Journalism Awards take place on Thursday, 14th of November at the Mansion House, Dublin.
