Chris Cashen writes about World News Day

“The significance of truth and journalism cannot be overstated in today’s publishing landscape. While other platforms may prioritize sensational content and viral trends, journalism remains committed to uncovering and reporting the truth. Journalism has never been more critical in an era when experts are brushed off as fake and doing your research means getting half-baked ramblings from TikTok.

Truth, however inconvenient, is the fulcrum of journalism, and we need to nurture it. I would much rather that, than to advocate platforms that purport content in an addiction spiral aimed at keeping me for longer—journalism answers to its objective truth, whereas other avenues prioritize another criterion. Nothing is more noble than pursuing truth, knowing it will cause division, and understanding the obstacles speaks to what we all need. And that isn’t an echo chamber.

Has anyone ever walked away from reading dedicated journalism in an established brand and felt exhausted? Did it feel like you’d wasted time? Now, how did you feel after scrolling through social before sleeping last night?”

WORLD NEWS DAY is a global initiative to draw public attention to the role that journalists play in providing trustworthy news and information that serves citizens and democracy. This week, more than 100 countries, hundreds of news organisations, media associations, and individuals have this week joined forces to highlight the importance of fact-based journalism.
