Significant increase in entries for biggest-ever Journalism Awards
National Lottery on board to sponsor 2016 NewsBrands Ireland Journalism Awards
A total of 1200 entries have been submitted as part of the 2016 NewsBrands Ireland Journalism Awards sponsored by the National Lottery, making it the biggest showcase of original Irish journalism ever held.
The Journalism Awards returns this year with an increase of some 50% in the volume of entries compared to 2013 underlines the popularity of the programme – and the health of Irish journalism today.
Outstanding quality of entries
“Now that the awards are back, we are delighted not just by the volume of entries but by the outstanding quality of work submitted,” Vincent Crowley, chairman NewsBrands, said. “As a snapshot of how our industry is faring, I think a total of 1200 entries shows the dedication and diversity that Irish journalism represents today.
“We are lucky to have a sponsor of the calibre of the National Lottery to help us in relaunching this key industry event,” he added. “I wish all entrants good luck and look forward to seeing them at the awards in November.”
Sponsor of the awards: National Lottery
Also at today’s announcement was Dermot Griffin, Chief Executive of Premier Lotteries Ireland, operator of the National Lottery, who said: “We are delighted to be supporting the 2016 Journalism awards. There has never been as much news produced as there is today, and in Ireland we access more than most, so it is absolutely fitting that we recognise the men and women who work around the clock to deliver the highest quality journalism.”
The closing date for entries has now passed and the 1200 submissions are being assessed by the 32-strong judging panel – comprising national journalists and editors – under the chairmanship of Professor John Horgan, former Press Ombudsman of Ireland.
The awards ceremony will take place in Dublin’s Mansion House on Thursday, November 3rd where prizes will be awarded in 25 categories including news, foreign, business, politics and crime and the Journalist of the Year will also be announced.
